Cultural Humility & Competence

The Role of Cultural Competence and Humility in Therapy

Cultural humility means that I never assume to know your experience just because I may have met someone who looks like you—or even because I, myself, share some of your same identities. Instead, cultural humility to me means:

  • Practicing cultural self-awareness – Continuously reflecting on my own perspectives and biases.

  • Asking questions instead of making assumptions – Being open and curious, rather than thinking I already have the answers.

  • Acknowledging that I won’t always get it right – And being willing to learn and course-correct when needed.

I have had great therapy from providers who did not look like me or share my cultural background. That wasn’t by accident—it was because those providers consistently checked in with themselves and with me about our differences, rather than ignoring them. They created a space where I felt understood, even when we didn’t share the same lived experience.

At KAW Therapy, cultural competence and humility aren’t just ideals—they are my guiding principles. Because therapy isn’t just about healing—it’s about being truly seen, understood, and supported in a way that reflects who you are. I follow in the footsteps of the great therapists and professors who have helped me and provide therapy to ALL communities of people, not just the ones where I personally identify.
